Hitler is often thought of as a truly inhumane, evil being, who had a superiority complex that ended up killing him. Americans who exhibit and believe in those same traits don't think of themselves as those things. Boggles the mind.

It's people like Norman that makes me want to cry for my own country. ;; I want to be optimistic and hopeful, and people like him make that so hard.

LOL at the Church comment, because what.

I have a hard time summing up what I think about suicide. I suppose if I were to try, it'd be a lot like your post and more -- it's a varying and changing aspect, and everyone thinks differently of it, and have experienced it differently.

My Uncle, my Dad's brother, took his own life. He did it before my Papa got home, and left his note in his apartment across town. When my Papa got home, he found my Uncle on the floor -- and you can imagine what else he found without my going into details. It was a flurry of motion after that, and left my Papa and Dad bereft and hurting.

When I say, "suicide is selfish", I'm thinking of my Papa, and him finding my Uncle like that. I'm thinking of my Papa, who took on my Uncle's debt, and had to sell my Uncle's apartment, car and belongings (none of which was easy, of course; DAMN YOU BAD ECONOMY :P) to help himself, because that's how much debt my Uncle was in. I'm thinking of my Papa, who lost his second son.

Then I think about my Uncle, and his drug addiction. I think about how he truly felt in that moment; of not thinking to himself, "I can call my brother -- he'd do anything for me", or "if I just wait for Dad to come home, he can try and talk me down from this". I think about how much pain he must of been feeling to make that decision, because it's not instantaneous, and (I imagine) it takes all your strength left to decide on it.

TL;DR like I said, it's a vast subject, but it doesn't mean people have to be ignorant about it. Looking down on an act that people do in one of their darkest moments isn't right, and we should be trying to understand and help people, not judge and belittle them for it.

Yes, my stances are liberal in nature. If you check out the about page on here, you might find that I freely disclose my political leanings.

On insurance - I shouldn't have to leave the country in order to have cheap health care coverage. People shouldn't be forced to choose between their electricity and their health or their meals and their health. The health care system in this country has been flawed for a very, very long time.

On wealth/hard work - I dare you to find me very many multimillionaire CEOs who actually work hard or work at all. I also dare you to find me any factory workers who are wealthy.

And thank you for basically telling me that I need to change my opinions to fit your world view. That's such a wonderful point of view for you to have.

Of course you're not going to vote for him. All of your reasons regarding why you won't vote for him are clearly Democratic or Socialist views. For example, I also agree that health care should go up if you have a per-existing condition. Why shouldn't it. This isn't a Communist country where we hand everything out to everyone. Insurance is a business not a coupon. If you're at a higher risk of using your insurance then you need to pay more. Welcome to America. If you want cheap insurance Canada is only a few days drive away no matter where you are in the country. To comment on you saying that hard work and personal merits won't help you attain wealth, you're wrong. The problem isn't that working hard won't get you far, I know from experience, it's that a lot of Americans spend their money too freely. Save it and start a business of your own. Grow that business so that it is successful and you will attain wealth. You really need to rethink a lot of what you have said.

American Exceptionalism is the puffery used to excuse misadventure abroad and inaction at home. In a recent blog post I analyze the American Exceptionalism concept and contrast it with a healthy patriotism that could help unite the public against those few who are ruining America. http://www.ragingwisdom.com/?p=629

I miss blogging a lot, but then I see your blog posts, and kind of don't miss it anymore; you've always been really well-versed with words, especially in blogging, and manage to come across 190% more coherent than I ever could. :D

Thank you for this post, as I always say. It makes me all rage-y inside when someone's all like, "IT'S OBAMA'S FAULT WE'RE IN THE RECESSION", when we were well on our way there 10 years ago. It wasn't one president, or a group of people. It was a combined effort on all our parts, and our unwillingness to admit that we were in trouble, and we were going to be in a financial crisis if we didn't make changes. It's a lot of things, and to make President Obama the scapegoat just shows what kind of country we really are.

I don't know who you are or where you get your information, but you're not quite as up on the facts as you seem to think you are. The number of millionaires is actually at a record high as of June of this year. Facts and information used in this post came not only from the government (via reports about tax returns), but from news sources that were linked throughout the post.

Your ignorance about the distribution of resources is quite astonishing, since what you are comparing socialism/communism to is actually a form of fascism, aka a far-right government gone out of control. There are countries that do use forms of socialism that are not cited by people who use the arguments about how those forms of economies are evil: Sweden, Denmark, Norway, etc. These are countries that actually have their economies set up in a way that more appropriately represents the socialist or communist ideal, but they are ignored in favor of countries like Russia or Cuba that have very little to do with real versions of communism or socialism.

If you think that the conflict doesn't really exist, then I feel bad for you because, whether or not you feel like admitting it, it does exist. Blaming the problems of poverty solely on teen pregnancies, single-parent households, and high school dropouts is ignorance at its finest. Blaming the poor for being poor is classist behavior that is somehow considered to be acceptable even though it is blatantly ignorant. And commenting that people who are standing up to corporations are part of subversive groups really makes me wonder just how aware you are of what goes on in the world.

The 1% refers to those who earn over $380,000 a year. There were only 235,415 who earned over $1 million in 2009 and of those only 8,274 over $10 million. The number of millionaires decreased 40% from the year before. I don't deny inequality but I think it is important to know how few fall into the very top to temper the illusion the Democrats promote that taxing the "rich" is all that's necessary to make the dreams of the other 308,000,000 come true. Certainly tax reform and throwing out the special interest breaks would be advisable and letting the Bush tax cuts for the top expire is fine, but totally insufficient to support the social programs and entitlements already in existence. There is an enormous amount of luck involved in outcomes but motivation and personal responsibility matter even more. The enormous part misguided government policy and incompetent bureaucrats have played in the current environment can not be denied, which makes it astounding to me that anyone would consider giving government more control over resources and distribution. That was tried in Russia, Cuba, etc. Expecting wisdom, efficiency or fairness free from corruption out of this government would be insane especially considering the freedom that would sacrificed in the process. Improvements are possible through government but ultimate control must remain in the hands of individuals.
I don't agree that this is a conflict between the 1% and the 99% as there are many millions of us not in the 1% who are grateful every day to be lucky enough to have the freedom and opportunities this country offers. Opportunities for success are just as available as ever, but require sound education, skills and effort. The proliferation of teenage pregnancies, single
parent households and high school dropouts are the main contributor
to poverty and failure. But blaming the successful for poor choices made
by others is offensive and only provides an excuse to continue to fail.
If you don't realize that virtually every subversive group globally has
infiltrated and now is carefully orchestrating the mobs in the streets,
you need to pay much more attention. If you are okay with unelected
bureaucrats controlling your life with no accountability or consideration
of merit, sit back and enjoy the chaos, the end of freedom and the end
of the rule of law. It's your choice but make sure you understand
exactly what the choice is.
